Hacks: How to access Apple Music

The Apple Music streaming service is now available. Here’s how you can access it

Apple Music isn’t an iTunes replacement; instead it’s Apple’s answer to Spotify, Google Play Music and Tidal. This entirely new service allows users to stream the entirety of iTunes’ catalogue, along with 100,000 tracks from their own iTunes library, to a device running Apple Music, all for just £9.99 a month. And, get this, the first three months are completely free.

So, now that you’ve decided you want to get in on three months of free Apple Music, how do you go about getting yourself set up? While it’s an absolute breeze on an iOS device, for PC, Mac and Android users, it’s not as simple as just accessing it online or visiting the Play store.

How to access Apple Music on iPhone and iPad:

Apple has made Apple Music a core part of its latest iOS update, meaning that – as stated before – it’s easy to set up.

Here’s how to access Apple Music from your iPhone and iPad:

  1. Make sure your iPhone or iPad is running the latest operating system, iOS 8.4, and update it if it isn’t.
  2. On your homescreen, you’ll notice the Music icon in the bottom-right corner has changed from the reddish-orange shade seen before, becoming white. This is your portal to Apple Music.
  3. Once open, Music should automatically log in using the Apple ID information stored on iOS. You only need to select which package you’d like to sign up for: Individual or Family.
  4. If you have any music already stored on your phone, or in iCloud, Music will ask whether you wish to merge the two collections, or replace what you have stored on your phone. The choice is yours.
  5. Next up, Music will ask you to pick three or more of your favourite artists so that it can get a feel for what sort of music you like. Out of the artists you select, it then wants to know which ones you love, and those you merely like.
  6. Once done, that’s it! You’re now free to explore the wonderful and confusing world of Apple Music on your iOS device.

How to access Apple Music on PC and Mac:

If you want to access Apple Music on your Windows PC or Mac, it’s not quite as simple as visiting a website and streaming millions of tracks from the comfort of Chrome or Firefox. No, to access Apple Music you need to download and install software – how tiresome.

Here’s how to access Apple Music from your computer:

  1. Make sure you’re running iTunes version 12.2 on your computer. If not, you can download it for OS X 10.7 and Windows 7 or later.
  2. Once done, you’ll notice that the iTunes logo in your dock has updated, and iTunes has a snazzy new look to boot.
  3. Head on over to the “For You” tab. You’ll be greeted with the sign-up screen for Apple Music. (If you don’t want to sign up, hit Radio to listen to Beats 1 Radio for free.)
  4. Next you’ll have to pick between an Individual or Family account. Note: you can’t create an account without a credit card on file.
  5. After that, Apple Music will ask you what music you like, the bands you listen to, and then will make you pick out your favourites.
  6. Once you’ve done that, you can sit back and enjoy the delights of Apple Music’s extensive catalogue.

How to access Apple Music on Android:

Using Apple Music on Android is currently impossible through standard means.

Apple has said it will be making its way onto Google’s mobile operating system, but it won’t actually be available until “Fall” this year.

If you desperately want to listen to Apple Music’s radio station on your Android device, some crafty folks have uncovered the HTTPS URL used for the stream. You can find it here – but note that it only works on Android 4.1 and higher, and it’s not very reliable.
